  107. 1.  WHAT IS SNAGIT?
  108. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  109.   SnagIt has been providing Microsoft Windows users with an easy way
  110.   to capture and print Windows screens since it was first released in
  111.   1991.  In "Windows 3.1 Secrets," author Brian Livingston calls
  112.   SnagIt "the print utility Microsoft Windows forgot."
  113.  
  114.   SnagIt allows Windows users to capture an entire screen, an
  115.   individual window or a user defined portion of the screen.  SnagIt
  116.   also accepts input directly from the Windows clipboard or a Windows
  117.   bitmap (BMP) file.  Once captured, SnagIt will send the image to the
  118.   printer, the clipboard, a graphics file or to e-mail.

  120.   Captured images can be pasted into other Windows applications such
  121.   as word processors and desktop publishing programs from the Windows
  122.   clipboard or by importing the images from saved graphic files.
  123.  
  124.   Software developers will find that SnagIt's full DDE support allows
  125.   it's functionality to easily be incorporated into other Windows
  126.   applications.  SnagIt also provides MAPI support for Windows 95 and
  127.   NT, allowing captured images to be readily sent in an e-mail message.

  129. 1.1 What is the SnagIt Twin Pack?
  130.  
  131.   Many organizations are in the early stages of the transition from
  132.   Windows 3.1x to Windows 95 or NT.  To assist during this period,
  133.   TechSmith is offering the SnagIt Twin Pack.  It includes a 16-bit
  134.   version, tailored for Windows 3.1x, as well as a true 32-bit version
  135.   for Windows 95 and NT. The setup program automatically detects the
  136.   workstation's operating environment and loads the appropriate
  137.   version.  The purchaser is licensed to run either version and to
  138.   switch between them without further payment. Purchasing the Twin
  139.   Pack provides the benefits of running SnagIt today without the
  140.   penalty of Windows 95 or NT upgrade fees in the future.

  143. 2.  SNAGIT TWIN PACK SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  144. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  145.   In order to run SnagIt, your system must meet these specifications:

  147.   o  An IBM PC or compatible that meets the minimum hardware
  148.      requirements for your version of Microsoft Windows.

  150.   o  Microsoft Windows 3.1x, Windows For Workgroups 3.1x,
  151.      Windows NT 3.5x or Windows 95 installed and configured on your
  152.      system.

  154.   o  A mouse or other pointing device

  156.   o  For printed output, a Windows-supported printer that can print
  157.      bitmaps. (This includes most of the laser, dot matrix and ink jet
  158.      printers that Windows supports.  Plotters are not recommended for

  183. 3.1 Using SnagIt's On-line Help
  184.  
  185.   SnagIt's on-line Help system is compatible with the Windows Help
  186.   subsystems.  The SnagIt Help file contains all of the information
  187.   you'll need to use SnagIt, except for the SnagIt installation
  188.   procedure. This (README.TXT) file describes how to install SnagIt.
  189.  
  190.   To access SnagIt Help, select Help from the SnagIt menu bar, then
  191.   Help Index from the drop-down menu.
  192.  
  193.   To get a quick overview of SnagIt essentials, select Quick Help from
  194.   the Help menu.

  196.   To acquire information about your screen mode and printer type,
  197.   select System Info from the Help menu.

  199.   When you register SnagIt, you will receive a software key that will

  328. 6.  SETUP AND CONFIGURATION
  329. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  330. 6.1 Installation Instructions
  331.  
  332.   The SnagIt installation program SETUP.EXE is a Microsoft Windows
  333.   application.  You must have Windows, Windows for Workgroups, Windows
  334.   NT or Windows 95 installed prior to installing SnagIt.  Setup will
  335.   automatically detect the version of Windows in use and copy the
  336.   appropriate files during the install.  To install SnagIt, perform
  337.   the following steps:
  338.  
  339.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  340.  
  341.   2. Insert the SnagIt Twin Pack diskette into a floppy drive.
  342.  
  343.   For Windows 95 users:
  344.  
  345.   3. From the Start menu, select Run
  346.  
  347.   For Windows 3.1x and Windows NT users:
  348.  
  349.   3. From the Program Manager menu bar, choose File, and select Run
  350.      from the drop down menu.
  351.  
  352.   For all users:
  353.  
  354.   4. In the dialog box, enter:
  355.           a:\setup
  356.      (If you are installing SnagIt from a diskette drive other than
  357.      the A drive, you will need to change the drive letter in the
  358.      command line above.)
  359.  
  360.   5. Click on the OK button.
  361.  
  362.   6. When you have finished entering the setup information, click on
  363.      the Install button to install SnagIt.
  364.  
  365.  
  366. 6.2  Uninstall Instructions
  367.  
  368.   If after installing SnagIt Twin Pack, you find it necessary to
  369.   remove the software from your computer, perform the following steps:
  370.  
  371.   Uninstall instructions for Windows 95
  372.  
  373.   1. Run the Windows 95 Control Panel
  374.  
  375.   2. Open the Add/Remove Programs applet from Control Panel.
  376.  
  377.   3. Select SnagIt from the list of applications that can uninstalled
  378.      by Windows.
  379.  
  380.   4. Click on the Add/Remove button to uninstall SnagIt.
  381.  
  382.   Uninstall instructions for Windows NT
  383.  
  384.   1. Select the FILE RUN menu option in Program Manager.
  385.  
  386.   2. Type in the command line the following:
  387.  
  388.      TSCUNST /UN
  389.  
  390.   3. Press OK to uninstall SnagIt.
  391.  
  392.   If the uninstall program encounters errors, or if you have
  393.   Windows 3.x, see the following section for uninstall instructions.
  394.  
  395.  
  396. 6.3  Manual Uninstall Instructions
  397.  
  398.   If you do not have Windows 95 or encountered a problem during the
  399.   uninstall, here are the steps you can take to manually uninstall
  400.   SnagIt from your computer.
  401.  
  402.   Uninstall Instructions for Windows 3.1x and WFW 3.1x
  403.  
  404.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  405.  
  406.   2. In Program Manager, find the program group in which SnagIt was
  407.      installed. Click once on the SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press
  408.      the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  409.  
  410.   3. If you selected "Start SnagIt when Windows Starts" when
  411.      installing SnagIt, delete SnagIt from the Startup group.
  412.  
  413.      In Program Manager, find the Startup group. Click once on the
  414.      SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm that
  415.      you wish to delete the program item.
  416.  
  417.   4. Run File Manager and change to the directory in which you
  418.      installed SnagIt.  Delete the files SNAGIT.EXE and SNAGIT.HLP.
  419.  
  420.   Uninstall Instructions for Windows NT and Windows 95
  421.  
  422.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  423.  
  424.   For Windows 95 users:
  425.  
  426.   2. From the Start Menu, select Settings and then Taskbar. Now
  427.      configure your Start Menu Programs by clicking on the Advanced
  428.      button.
  429.  
  430.   3. Find the program group in which SnagIt/32 was installed. Click
  431.      once on the SnagIt/32 filename to highlight it. Press the delete
  432.      key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  433.  
  434.   4. If you selected "Start SnagIt/32 when Windows Starts" when
  435.      installing SnagIt/32, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  436.  
  437.      Follow step #2 and then find the Startup group. Click once on the
  438.      SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm
  439.      that you wish to delete the program item.
  440.  
  441.   5. Run Windows Explorer and change to the directory in which you
  442.      installed SnagIt/32. Delete the files SnagIt32.EXE and
  443.      SnagIt32.HLP.
  444.  
  445.   For Windows NT users:
  446.  
  447.   2. In Program Manager, find the program group in which SnagIt/32 was
  448.      installed. Click once on the SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it.
  449.      Press the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program
  450.      item.
  451.  
  452.   3. If you selected "Start SnagIt/32 when Windows Starts" when
  453.      installing SnagIt/32, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  454.  
  455.      In Program Manager, find the Startup group. Click once on the

  464. 7.  STARTING AND USING SNAGIT
  465. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  466.   To start SnagIt, double-click on the SnagIt icon in the Accessories
  467.   group.  (If you specified a group other than Accessories during
  468.   SnagIt installation, look in that group for the SnagIt icon.)
  469.  
  470.   Double-clicking on the SnagIt icon will execute SnagIt and bring
  471.   it to the foreground in its maximized form.  When SnagIt is
  472.   maximized, you may change any of the setup options (input, output,
  473.   format, etc.) from the SnagIt menus.
  474.  
  475.   You can also invoke SnagIt (that is, instruct SnagIt to capture an
  476.   image) while it is maximized, though it will usually be more
  477.   convenient to minimize SnagIt before doing your screen captures.
  478.  
  479.   If you selected the "Load when Windows starts" checkbox during
  480.   installation, SnagIt will start automatically the next time you
  481.   start Windows.
  482.  
  483. 7.1 SnagIt Default Settings
  484.  
  485.   When you install SnagIt, it uses the following default options:
  486.  
  487.   o  Input is set to Screen.  This means that when SnagIt is invoked,
  488.      it will capture the entire Windows desktop.
  489.  
  490.   o  Output is set to Printer.  This means that when SnagIt is
  491.      invoked, it will send the captured image to the Windows default
  492.      printer for printing.
  493.  
  494.   o  Format is set to Color.  This means that SnagIt will capture the
  495.      image with the screen colors intact.  (In most cases you can
  496.      print images using this format setting, even if your printer is
  497.      not a color printer. For additional information about SnagIt
  498.      format options, see the Format options topic in the SnagIt Help
  499.      file.)
  500.  
  501.   o  Printer Scale is set to Fit on Page.  This means that SnagIt will
  502.      output the captured image (on paper) at a size similar as the
  503.      image appears on the Windows screen but will reduce the image if
  504.      it is longer than one page.
  505.  
  506.   Refer to the SnagIt Help file for additional information on setting
  507.   SnagIt's input, output, format and other options.
  508.  
  509.   You can tell which settings SnagIt is using by looking at the bottom
  510.   of the SnagIt window when the program is maximized.
  511.  
  512. 7.2 Invoking SnagIt with <CTRL><SHIFT><P>
  513.  
  514.   Once you have SnagIt's parameters set as you want them, you are
  515.   ready to perform screen captures with SnagIt.
  516.  
  517.   The default hot-key sequence for invoking SnagIt is <Ctrl><Shift><P>.
  518.   When you press these keys, SnagIt will capture an image (determined
  519.   by the input parameter you selected), and send that image to the
  520.   output device you selected. To invoke SnagIt using a different
  521.   hotkey combination, see the Change Hotkeys topic in the SnagIt Help
  522.   file.
  523.  
  524. 7.3 Using the Mouse to Select Images
  525.  
  526.   You will need a mouse or other pointing device with SnagIt.
  527.   The left and right mouse buttons work as follows:
  528.  
  529.   Left Button     Selects SnagIt menu options, and selects screen
  530.                   regions and windows to capture.
  531.  
  532.   Right Button    Cancels a region or window selection, if you press
  533.                   it before you finish making the selection (that is,
  534.                   before you release the left mouse button).
  535.

  537. 8. REGISTERING SNAGIT TWIN PACK
  538. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  539.   This program and its associated files are part of an evaluation
  540.   package copyrighted by TechSmith Corporation. SnagIt is not in the
  541.   public domain.  This program must be registered if it is used
  542.   beyond the 45 day evaluation period.
  543.  
  544.   Single-User SnagIt Twin Pack
  545.  
  546.   Registration entitles the licensee to install either the 32 bit or
  547.   the 16 bit version of SnagIt and to switch between the two without
  548.   further payment.  The single-user license price is $39.95.
  549.  
  550.   When you register SnagIt Twin Pack, you have the option of
  551.   requesting a registered version of the software on diskette or of
  552.   requesting a software key to register the version you have. The
  553.   software key immediately removes all registration reminder screens
  554.   and evaluation expiration dates.
  555.  
  556.   Multi-User SnagIt Twin Pack
  557.  
  558.   Registration entitles the licensed organization to install 10 copies
  559.   of SnagIt, in any combination of 16 bit and 32 bit. A single diskette
  560.   is shipped along with the multi-user license.  The 10-user license
  561.   price is $200.00.

  563.   Registration Instructions

  565.   1.  Select the SnagIt program's Help menu.
  566.  
  567.   2.  Select How to Register from the menu.
  568.  
  569.   3.  Click on the Registration Form button.  Enter your registration
  570.       information in the fields provided.
  571.  
  572.       NOTE: You must specify a name or company name when you register.
  573.             Your software key will be personalized for that name
  574.             ONLY.  Your key will NOT not work if you change this name
  575.             after you have sent in your registration.
  576.  
  577.   4.  When you are finished, select OK. This will create a text file
  578.       called REGISTER.TXT in the SnagIt default directory. This is
  579.       your registration and order form.  It includes a price sheet and
  580.       your Product ID number.

  732. The SnagIt installation program SETUP.EXE is a Microsoft Windows

  735. automatically detect the version of Windows in use and copy the
  736. appropriate files during the install.  To install SnagIt, perform
